<image:title>Blog - 6 Summertime tips for nurturing a positive relationship with food and body image in kids - 6. Check in with your kids often.</image:title>
<image:caption>Summer is often a time that kids need increased rest, especially if they’ve been busy throughout the school year. Extra rest and free time can help kids recharge, but for some, too much down time can leave space for obsessing, over-thinking, and isolating. Summer is often a time when I see kids start to dip into disordered eating behaviors, excessive or obsessive exercise, and body image can take a negative turn. Keep communication open with your kiddos about their feelings around food, body image and exercise. If you notice an increase in negative thoughts, obsessive thoughts, or changes in behaviors, seek help early.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Promoting a positive relationship with food if you – the parent or caregiver – are on a diet: Is it possible? - {Bottom line}</image:title>
<image:caption>I would encourage ditching the diets and working on nurturing a positive relationship with food and body image for yourself and your family. Does this mean you can’t value incorporating nutrient dense foods, movement, and other aspects of health? Absolutely not! It just means that you’re doing so in a way that doesn’t glorify nutrient dense foods, shame less nutrient dense foods, and health is not defined by the number on the scale or outward appearances – all bodies are respected and worthy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Don’t wait! Recovery from an eating disorder is possible at any stage, but treatment is more effective the earlier it starts. Reach out to your kiddo’s pediatrician for further evaluation and diagnosis. Start assembling a treatment team. At a minimum, this should include your kiddo’s pediatrician or regular physician, a therapist, and a dietitian. Other specialists may be required as well, and that’s okay! You want your kiddo to have the best chance at recovery.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It can be daunting to plan family meals – whether it’s 3 nights/week, or maybe you prepare all meals and snacks. Yes, you absolutely spend time perusing Pinterest, Instagram or searching for recipes - and there’s nothing wrong with that if you enjoy doing that! Sometimes, though, you want someone to help you make it work for YOUR family, YOUR schedule, and YOUR family’s taste preferences. That’s where a dietitian can come in to get to know your family and personalize a meal planning approach that works for you and helps you regain confidence in feeding your family!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why “letting go” of the pressure around feeding your family is helpful for you and your kids - {What if I’m worried about my kiddo getting enough energy or missing out on certain nutrients? …}</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re truly worried about your kiddo getting enough to eat or enough of certain nutrients, remember that what they eat over the course of the day or week all contribute to getting “enough” nutrients and energy. Remember that, when kiddos are provided adequate amounts of safe foods throughout the day – alongside a variety of food and new foods in a pressure-free environment – they are pretty good at intuitively meeting their own energy needs. There certainly are considerations for kiddos that may need additional help due to pediatric feeding disorders or other medical concerns, so I also recommend seeking the advice and expertise of your pediatrician and/or a pediatric dietitian that can assess their intake.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If your kiddos are old enough to write, have them write down the thoughts, feelings and situations that are bugging them on a piece of paper. Tell them to place that piece paper in a jar or box to come back to after dinner – and then follow through! We want to validate that there might be something they are upset about or need to talk through, but the family table isn’t the place to do that. This can work for adults too!</image:caption>

Food does not have moral value. This food provides my body with energy and nourishment. This meal/snack will give me energy to do…. Food is meant to be enjoyed. <image:caption>While there are many other factors that contribute to the development of eating disorders, dieting is the number one predictor for the development of an eating disorder in children and adolescents. There are many stats to support this, but one that stands out to me is, as early as elementary school, 40% of girls are reporting that they’ve tried to lose weight via dieting. Where are they getting these messages that their bodies aren’t perfectly okay as they are and they need to change them?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to nurture a positive relationship with food in your home - Where to start…</image:title>
<image:caption>Make sure everyone in the house is onboard, especially the heads of the house! It’s totally okay to have a conversation with your kiddos and let them know that you are working on developing a more positive relationship with food as a family. Your conversation could sound something like this: “We (heads of the house) have noticed that we don’t speak very nicely about food and tend to label a lot of foods as good and bad, or healthy and unhealthy. We want to work to change this as a family, because we are learning that all food is okay, and we can still nourish our bodies with a variety of foods – some that are more nutrient dense and some that are less nutrient dense. We are going to work on keeping more food in the house, like “x, y, and z,” because we don’t want those foods to feel off limits. We’ll keep these conversations going, and we want you to feel like you can come to us if you have any food questions or concerns.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to nurture a positive relationship with food in your home</image:title>
<image:caption>Try this at home: Increase awareness of the language that you use around food. Write down phrases or comments you catch yourself saying about food/eating. This is a great place to start in decreasing negative food talk while shifting to use positive and neutral language.</image:caption>
